Berlin – Capital of Gas Street Lamps
Approximately 75,000 gas street lamps still exist around the world. Ninety percent of these lamps stand in Germany. In 2007 when the discussion about the future of Berlin`'s gas street lamps began in earnest there still existed approx. 44,000 or half the world's gas street lamps. The technology of Berlin's gas lamps is fully functional.
Over time, Berlin's gas lamps have been silent witnesses to the city's eventful history. The lights have survived good and bad times and have remained intact. For many people, these lamps have become an integral part of Berlin's cityscape, and, thus, of Berlin identity.
Moreover, due to its distinct appearance, Berlin's historic gas street lighting has become one of the city's unofficial landmarks.
