Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kulturgutschutz e.V.

The German Association for the Protection of Cultural Property is a registered charitable organization, which since 1993 has been concerned with issues of protection of cultural property. The members of the association share the belief that cultural property is not the exclusive reserve of the state but also needs voluntary action by the public.

The DGKS considers national and international richness in art and culture from all sections of society worthy of protection, as is formulated in its statutes of 1996. The association is a member of the International League of National Organizations for the Protection of Cultural Property.

The DGKS sees considerable deficits in the protection of cultural property in and throughout Germany despite undeniable efforts. This is particularly the case with the protection of cultural property against natural catastrophes like floods, also in the implementation of international agreements and directives, which for instance try to prevent the illegal trade in antiquities. DGKS tries to develope and strengthen awareness for these issues in politics and in the population and to improve action for the protection of cultural property. Cultural property needs more attention by politicians, media and society in general.
